Austin Zoo

The Austin Zoo is unique in the fact that it is a not-for-profit rescue sanctuary, with a focus on rescue and rehabilitation. The sanctuary prides itself on providing animal education, opening its doors to over 175,000 visitors last year alone. A relatively new phenomenon, the zoo started modestly enough as a goat ranch. It expanded to include a wide variety of farm animals in the 1990s. As of the early 2000s, the Austin Zoo has gradually expanded its number of exotic and foreign animals, and now houses over 300 different species on 20 acres.

These days, the zoo is the primarily the home of rescued and abandoned exotic animals, like lions, tigers, monkeys, and lemurs. The Austin Zoo provides care and rehabilitation for them for the duration of their lifetimes.

The Austin Zoo is in Travis Country and near Austin, Texas. Austin, the capital city of Texas, is a cultural hub with a thriving downtown arts and music scene. Perhaps best known for its festivals and events, the annual South By Southwest (SXSW) takes place each year in early March, attracting tens of thousands of attendees to downtown Austin. Many shows and events associated with the festival can be attended for free. The famed Austin City Limits program also hosts its own music festival, held each year in Zilker Park. When visiting downtown Austin, be sure to incorporate a few museum visits into your stay. The Texas State History Museum, Blanton Museum of Art, and Latin American Art Museum are all relatively new and centrally located activities to add to your stay in Austin.
