Cincinnati Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo opened in 1875, making it one of the longest running zoos in the United States. Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, it was founded in the heart of the city, although the city has grown around the zoo. Situated on 65 acres of land, the zoo houses nearly two thousand different animals and more than five hundred different species. With more than a million visitors annually, the Cincinnati Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in Ohio.

The Reptile House at the Cincinnati Zoo is the oldest building in any United States Zoo. But that’s not the park’s only record. The longest living captive alligator also called the Cincinnati Zoo home, living to 70 years of age. The zoo also cared for the last known living Carolina parakeet, which died in 1918. Surely the Cincinnati Zoo’s history is almost as fascinating as all of its animals.

Cincinnati is one of the biggest cities in Ohio, and conveniently located near both Kentucky and Indiana. It calls two professional sports teams its own, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cincinnati Bengals. The city also hosts the Cincinnati Masters, a popular tennis tournament, each year. If sports aren’t you thing, Cincinnati is known for its collection of grand architecture, especially in the downtown area. The neighborhood known as “Over-the-Rhine” has one of the world’s biggest displays of Italianate architecture. In fact, the city is frequently called the “Paris of America” because of its intricate and ornate building style. Over-the-Rhine is one of the nation’s largest classified historic districts. For music lovers, Cincinnati hosts the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival, which takes place in year in July, going all the way back to 1962. And for those beer lovers, the city’s Oktoberfest is the largest celebration of its kind in America.
