Housing nearly 700 animals, Turtle Back Zoo is located in West Orange, New Jersey. The zoo is actually a part of the Essex County Park System, which is considered as the oldest county park in the US. The zoo originally features animals that are indigenous to New Jersey. Today, however, it features animals from different continents except Antarctica.

Turtle Back Zoo has many exhibits. In alphabetical order, these are American Alligator, Australian Exhibit, Black Bear, Essex Farm, Great Plains, Prairie Dogs, Reptile Center, River Otter, South America, Wild New Jersey, Wolf Woods, Penguin Coast, Southeast Asia, and Tropical Currents Aquarium.

There are other attractions at Turtle Back Zoo. These are a train ride, playground, and carousel. The zoo also has a mini golf course, replicating various regions like Sahara Desert, African grasslands and Congo. Animal sculptures are scattered in different parts of the golf course.

Membership: Zoo members will receive unlimited free admission for the entire year, free admission to members’ only “Night Moves” events, free subscription to the zoo’s newsletter, voting privileges during Society annual meeting, 10% discount on gift shops, and reciprocal privileges to hundreds of other zoos and aquariums in the US.

Group: Groups of 15 or more people are qualified of the group rates, provided that the rates will be paid in advance. Discounted ride tickets will be also available for groups, but again, this should be paid in advance.

The zoo is accessible through different routes such as NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Rte 280 West, Rte 280 East, Rte 80 West, Rte 23, Rte 287, JFK Blvd, Rte 10, Rte 78 West, South Orange Avenue, GW Bridge, Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, and Staten Island.


Turtle Back Zoo Jobs:

Currently, there are no Turtle Back Zoo jobs available. If you want to get involved with Turtle Back Zoo, the only way is to become a docent volunteer.

Docent classes will run on 4 Sundays of March. The docent volunteers are responsible for guiding and giving educational talks to the visitors. Docent volunteers are stationed throughout the zoo to provide information.

Docents should be 18 years of age and above. A fee of $20 applies for those who want to become new docent volunteers.

Apart from visiting the Turtle Back Zoo, there are other things that you may do while you and your kids are in West Orange.

Explore new sites like Edison National Historic Site, Treetop Adventure Course, South Mountain Reservation, Rahway River, and Eagle Rock Reservation. There are many parks in West Orange as well like Boland Park, Byrne Park, Club Boulevard, Codey Arena, Llewellyn Park, and Colgate Park.
