The Stone Zoo, located in Stoneham, Massachusetts, is a medium sized zoo comprised of 26 acres. It is run by the same company that runs the neighboring Boston Franklin Park Zoo, Zoo New England. An accredited member of the AZA, the Stone Zoo was founded in 1905. The Stone Zoo has a vast collection of wild and exotic animals, including its star polar bear, “Major,” and an open aviary where birds can fly freely. In the eighties, the zoo was a breeding house for endangered species, helping to propagate gibbons, orangutans, and kudus.
In addition to its collection of wild animals, the zoo also has child-friendly activities. The Stone Zoo has its own Kiddy Zoo, which is based around famous Mother Goose tales. It also has a barnyard area with goats and zebu, plus a playground. The holiday themed Zoolights is a must see attraction, boasting thousands of Christmas lights on display from Thanksgiving until the new year.

Stone Zoo is located in Stoneham, Massachusetts, just nine miles north of downtown Boston. There are many public transportation routes into downtown Boston, or use Route 128, which ends right in the center of Boston metro. If you’re a sports fan, you can’t miss the Boston Red Sox or the Boston Celtics, who both play near the city center. There’s also the rigorous Boston Marathon that happens each April, which is the world’s oldest yearly marathon. Of course, there’s something for the history buffs, as well. A key location in the American Revolution, Boston was home to the Siege of Boston, the Tea Party, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. One of the twenty largest cities in the United States, there’s plenty to do for everyone in Boston!
