Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo houses over 1,700 different species of animals on an expanse of 135 acres. Located in Kentucky’s Poplar Level area of Louisville, the zoo offers a peek into many different natural habitats and geological biomes of its animals. The zoo has only grown and improved since its founding in 1969. With nearly a million visitors a year, the zoo is one of the more popular attractions in Louisville.

Perhaps its popularity is due to hosting the World’s Largest Halloween Party throughout October, or the zoo key system, which allows visitors to “unlock” different pieces of information about many of the zoo’s animals.

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and has a plethora of things to do! Louisville might be best known for its annual Kentucky Derby. If you’re lucky enough to visit Louisville in early May, you can participate in the two-week long festival that leads up to the grand event. The “Thunder Over Louisville” fireworks display, which kicks off the Derby celebrations, is the biggest firework event in North America, and the second largest display in the entire world. But Louisville has much more than fancy hats and horses. The annual Forecastle Festival is a notorious musical event, drawing over 35,000 visitors each year to hear acts like The Flaming Lips and The Smashing Pumpkins. And, of course, there’s the famous Museum Row, located in the Main District of downtown Louisville, which includes a history museum, science center, and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft.
