The Chaffee Zoo is located in Fresno, California, within Roeding Park. A member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the zoo was formed in the early 1900s, but has only recently grown to its current stature in the early 2000s. Renowned for its involvement in the California Classic Half Marathon, the zoo offers the ability to race past lions, tigers and bears for cash prizes.
The popularity of a traveling stingray exhibit prompted the Chaffee Zoo to fund the creation of a permanent structure, which opened to the public in 2009. One of the zoo’s most famous advocates was Nosey, an Asian elephant whose moniker was acquired through a city-wide naming contest. Visitors loved Nosey so much that they petitioned to create the Fresno Zoological Society, an interest group that was formed in the 1940s, and works to find funding opportunities for the Chaffee Zoo.
