Open in November 1962, Phoenix Zoo was originally known as Maytag Zoo. The name of the zoo was changed so that the local community may be identified with it. Today, Phoenix Zoo serves as a home to around 1,300 animals.
Phoenix Zoo has four major areas, each of which represents the native wildlife in different parts of the world. These areas are known as Arizona Trail, Africa Trail, Tropics Trail and Children’s Trail. The fourth is actually a collection of small animals from different parts of the world hence the term Children’s Trail.
Further, Children’s Trail leads to the Harmony Farm where visitors may watch demonstrations about farming and agriculture though the contents of the demos are targeted toward the children audience. Harmony Farm also serves as the petting zoo.
There are other attractions at Phoenix Zoo nonetheless. These are the safari train, endangered species carousel, and polar slide. Kids may also play at Yakulla Caverns, Leapin Lagoon, and Fisher Price Discovery Farm.
Phoenix Zoo is voted as one of the Top 5 zoos for kids in the US.
